Token Report

Find out why your Codex or Claude Code usage ran out

The free token-counter plugin reads the usage Codex and Claude Code record on your computer and builds a local report of where your tokens went. None of your usage leaves your computer unless you ask to share it here.

What the report shows

  • How each weekly limit was spent. The limit percentage Codex or Claude Code recorded, beside your running usage for that week, starting again at every reset.
  • Your heaviest days. Tokens used each day, so the day that ate your limit stands out.
  • Which models and sessions used the most. Input by model, and the session that used the most.
  • What filled the context. Tool output, your messages, instructions and the rest, and how much of the context each took.
  • When you hit the limit. The days a limit was recorded as reached, beside each day’s response times.
  • What it would cost on the API. The same tokens priced at API list prices.

The Codex report counts the context in tokens. The Claude Code plugin ships no tokenizer, so its report measures the context in bytes of visible text instead.

1. Install the plugin

Codex CLI

codex plugin marketplace add stdcmms-lang/token-counter
codex plugin add token-counter@stdcmms-lang

Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app

Add the marketplace first, with the first command above or by opening a clone of the repository as a project. Then restart the app, open Plugins, choose stdcmms-lang and install Token Counter, or open the install in the app. Start a new chat afterwards.

Claude Code

claude plugin marketplace add stdcmms-lang/token-counter
claude plugin install token-counter-claude@stdcmms-lang

The token-counter-claude plugin comes from the same marketplace. It reads Claude Code's transcripts and retained capture history, installs no packages and ships no tokenizer. Its report, capture history and share token are separate from the Codex plugin's. Claude Code loads plugins at session start, so start a new session after installing.

2. Ask Codex or Claude Code

  • “Generate a token report” for a local report
  • “Share my token usage to tokenusage.dev” to share it

In Claude Code, you can also use /token-counter-claude:token-report for a local report or /token-counter-claude:token-share to share it.
