Codex usage

When do Codex usage limits reset?

Find your account's reset times and understand five-hour limits, weekly limits, and changes after a banked or paid reset.

Where can I see my Codex reset time?

Open the Codex usage dashboard to see your current limits and reset times.

In an active Codex CLI session, run /status to see your remaining limits.

How do five-hour and weekly limits work?

OpenAI's pricing documentation gives estimates of local messages per five-hour period and says these are not fixed message limits.

Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Local messages and cloud chats share your plan's usage allowance; weekly limits may also apply.

Can a reset change my weekly reset date?

Using a full banked reset refreshes your five-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date.

A completed purchase of a paid weekly reset restores your five-hour and weekly usage immediately. Your new weekly period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied, and the next automatic weekly reset is seven days after that first request.

Paid resets are for eligible ChatGPT Plus and Pro personal accounts, not Free, Go, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Whether you get a banked reset, and when it expires, varies by offer, plan, workspace and region.

What if I hit a limit before it resets?

If you reach your usage limits during an active turn, the agent can continue working on that turn, subject to fair use limits.

ChatGPT Plus and Pro users who reach their usage limit can buy additional credits to keep working without upgrading their plan. Business, Edu and Enterprise plans with flexible pricing can buy additional workspace credits to keep working.

All users can also run extra local chats with an API key, with usage charged at standard API rates.

What does the reset tracker tell me?

The Codex reset tracker records announcement times from @thsottiaux's posts on X, not when any account's limits were reset.

A banked reset is saved for you to apply later; an automatic reset applies directly and creates no saved reset. Read Banked vs automatic Codex resets for the definitions.
