Banked vs automatic Codex resets
The two kinds of Codex usage-limit reset @thsottiaux announces on X, and how the Codex reset tracker tells them apart.
The two types
- Automatic reset
- A direct reset of Codex usage or rate limits for eligible accounts, with no reset saved for later. A definite announcement of such a reset is classified as automatic when it mentions no saved, banked or redeemable reset, even if it does not use the word automatic.
- Banked reset grant
- A one-time reset saved for eligible users to apply or redeem later. Granting or loading it does not itself refill limits.
- Automatic and banked resets
- One announcement that explicitly includes both a direct reset and a banked grant.
- Type not recorded
- An announcement recorded before the tracker recorded reset types. The JSON carries its type as
null.
How the tracker tells them apart
The monitor reads @thsottiaux's public posts on X. For a post to qualify, each of the two classifications must identify a definite forthcoming or completed reset announcement for everyone or an explicitly named whole plan or group of plans, with high confidence. Both classifications must agree on the type; their announcement status and eligible scope may differ. If the two disagree on the type, the post is not recorded.
For a banked reset, forthcoming or completed describes the grant, not the user's later application. The type is the monitor's classification of the post. It is not proof that any account's limit was reset: open the post for its exact wording and eligibility.
The classification rules exclude teasers, ordinary rolling reset schedules, allowance increases without a reset and offers to buy or pay for a reset.
What an announcement tells you
An announcement may describe a forthcoming event or one already completed. An automatic reset applies directly to eligible accounts and creates no saved reset. A banked reset grant saves a reset for eligible users to apply later; granting it does not itself refill limits. Check your Codex account for your personal reset times. The tracker shows when each post was published, not when a reset reached any account.
A banked reset example
On 7 October 2026, a post by @thsottiaux included the words Loading a banked reset in everyone's paid accounts.
Under these definitions that announces a banked reset grant. The tracker shows the type it recorded after the post time.
Announcements recorded before the tracker recorded types are not reclassified from post text; the JSON carries their type as null.
Where the labels appear
- On the tracker, after each announcement's time, and in its calendar legend: A for an automatic reset, B for a banked grant, A+B for both, and • for a type not recorded.
- In the JSON at
/api/resets, asresetType:automatic, banked, bothornull. Developers documents the fields. - In the MCP server at
/mcp, on every item both tools return. - Text and email alerts for announcements with a recorded type name that type.
Reuse the data with credit: where you show it to other people, show Data: tokenusage.dev on the same screen or in the same message. Developers has the fair-use terms.
